While the Catholic Church is the largest religion in the world, it is sometimes also the most misunderstood.

The beliefs of the Catholic Church and her beautiful teachings are consistent through the ages.

• We believe that human beings were created by God in love and that everything God creates is good and created out of love. While we have the capacity for sin, the Church believes in the dignity of the human person above all else.
• We also believe that goodness infuses all of God’s wondrous creation. All creation, made by God, reflects that goodness. Catholics see the world and its beauty, renewed by the Incarnation, as sacramental – speaking of God’s goodness and love.
• We believe in stewardship. Everything is given to us by God and our Catholic responsibility is to share our time, talent and treasure with those around us.
• We believe in the Holy Trinity, that God has revealed himself to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit – a communion of knowledge and love – has created us to share in that life.
• We believe in community and a living Church – believers are a part of the living Body of Christ and, as such, we are a reflection of the communal nature of the Trinity.
• We believe that God loved his creation so much that he became human in the person of Jesus to walk among us.
• We believe in the communion of the saints – models of faith who help us and guide us in our daily lives.
• We believe in Jesus’ crucifixion, death and resurrection, and we hope that one day we will rise to new life with him.

Becoming Catholic today means joining an ancient faith, deeply rooted in the teachings and traditions of Christ, that is filled with hope and vibrancy as we continue to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to all the ends of the earth. 

 Si bien la Iglesia Católica es la religión más grande del mundo, a veces también es la más incomprendida.

Las creencias de la Iglesia Católica y sus hermosas enseñanzas son consistentes a través de los siglos.

• Creemos que los seres humanos fueron creados por Dios en amor y que todo lo que Dios crea es bueno y creado por amor. Si bien tenemos la capacidad de pecar, la Iglesia cree en la dignidad de la persona humana por encima de todo.
• También creemos que la bondad infunde toda la maravillosa creación de Dios. Toda la creación, hecha por Dios, refleja esa bondad. Los católicos ven el mundo y su belleza, renovada por la Encarnación, como algo sacramental, hablando de la bondad y el amor de Dios.
• Creemos en la mayordomía. Todo nos es dado por Dios y nuestra responsabilidad católica es compartir nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro con quienes nos rodean.
• Creemos en la Santísima Trinidad, que Dios se ha revelado a nosotros como Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo – una comunión de conocimiento y amor – nos ha creado para compartir esa vida.
• Creemos en la comunidad y en una Iglesia viva: los creyentes son parte del Cuerpo vivo de Cristo y, como tal, somos un reflejo de la naturaleza comunitaria de la Trinidad.
• Creemos que Dios amó tanto a su creación que se hizo humano en la persona de Jesús para caminar entre nosotros.
• Creemos en la comunión de los santos, modelos de fe que nos ayudan y guían en nuestra vida diaria.
• Creemos en la crucifixión, muerte y resurrección de Jesús, y esperamos que algún día resucitemos a una nueva vida con él.

Convertirse en católico hoy significa unirse a una fe antigua, profundamente arraigada en las enseñanzas y tradiciones de Cristo, que está llena de esperanza y vitalidad a medida que continuamos difundiendo las Buenas Nuevas de Jesucristo hasta todos los confines de la tierra. 

OCIA is a process of study, exploration, faith-sharing, and faith formation with specific liturgical rites for seekers and inquirers. Seekers and inquirers are non-baptized adults who desire to be fully initiated into the Roman Catholic Church and/or baptized adult Christians who desire full communion in the Roman Catholic Church.

Adults or older children who have not been baptized and desire to join the Church are invited into the ancient celebration of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. During this process, which is marked by regular ritual acts, participants are introduced to the liturgy, the teachings, and the life of the Catholic Church.

Adults or older children who were baptized in another Christian denomination prepare in a similar way for the sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist during their reception into the Catholic Church.

OCIA is a Journey

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is a process that proceeds over weeks and months. It has several steps:

• Pre-Catechumenate
  This is the earliest phase in the process; it is also known as the Period of Inquiry. Catechumens and Candidates acknowledge that Christ is calling them into the Church through the movement of the Holy Spirit. This is a time for seeking and reflection.
• Rite of Initiation
  The first Rite in the RCIA process, the Rite of Initiation accepts new members into the worshipping community.
• Catechumenate
  The longest part of the process, the Catechumenate is a time of learning and formation in the traditions and doctrine of the Catholic Church. This is a time for sharing stories, reading scripture, and studying the Church customs, traditions and doctrine. Participants also participate in worship services and various Church rituals.
• Rite of Election
  Catechumens and Candidates are chosen to be received by the bishop and the community and to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Easter.
• Sacraments of Initiation
  At the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday), all newly elected members of the community who have been journeying through the RCIA process are welcomed formally into the community of believers through receiving the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.
• Mystagogy
  This is a time of reflection and celebration after the formal reception into the Catholic Church. Mystagogia means “leading into the mystery” and it is a time to explore the deep mystery of our faith and go forth to help build the reign of God on Earth as new members of the faithful. 

OCIA Team

People journeying through the RCIA process need sponsors and community support to help them grow in faith. The RCIA team of sponsors help guide, support and instruct those discerning whether to become members of our Catholic community. Team members share their faith with inquiring adults who are seeking more information about the Catholic Church, many of whom seek to celebrate one or more of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.

OCIA es un proceso de estudio, exploración, intercambio de fe y formación en la fe con ritos litúrgicos específicos para buscadores e indagadores. Los buscadores e indagadores son adultos no bautizados que desean ser iniciados plenamente en la Iglesia Católica Romana y/o cristianos adultos bautizados que desean la plena comunión en la Iglesia Católica Romana.

Los adultos o niños mayores que no han sido bautizados y desean unirse a la Iglesia están invitados a la antigua celebración del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos. Durante este proceso, que está marcado por actos rituales regulares, los participantes conocen la liturgia, las enseñanzas y la vida de la Iglesia Católica.

Los adultos o niños mayores que fueron bautizados en otra denominación cristiana se preparan de manera similar para los sacramentos de la Confirmación y la Eucaristía durante su recepción en la Iglesia Católica.

OCIA es un Viaje

El Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos es un proceso que dura semanas y meses. Tiene varios pasos:

• Precatecumenado
  Esta es la fase más temprana del proceso; también se le conoce como Período de Investigación. Los catecúmenos y los candidatos reconocen que Cristo los está llamando a la Iglesia mediante el movimiento del Espíritu Santo. Este es un tiempo de búsqueda y reflexión.
• Rito de Iniciación
  El primer Rito en el proceso de RICA, el Rito de Iniciación, acepta nuevos miembros en la comunidad de adoración.
• Catecumenado
  La parte más larga del proceso, el Catecumenado, es un tiempo de aprendizaje y formación en las tradiciones y doctrina de la Iglesia Católica. Este es un momento para compartir historias, leer las Escrituras y estudiar las costumbres, tradiciones y doctrina de la Iglesia. Los participantes también participan en servicios de adoración y diversos rituales de la Iglesia.
• Rito de elección
  Los Catecúmenos y Candidatos son elegidos para ser recibidos por el obispo y la comunidad y recibir los Sacramentos de Iniciación en Pascua.
• Sacramentos de iniciación
  En la Vigilia Pascual (Sábado Santo), todos los miembros recién elegidos de la comunidad que han estado viajando a través del proceso de RICA son bienvenidos formalmente a la comunidad de creyentes al recibir los Sacramentos de Iniciación: Bautismo, Eucaristía y Confirmación.
• Mistagogía
  Este es un momento de reflexión y celebración después de la recepción formal en la Iglesia Católica. Mistagogia significa “conducir al misterio” y es un momento para explorar el misterio profundo de nuestra fe y avanzar para ayudar a construir el reino de Dios en la Tierra como nuevos miembros de los fieles.

Las personas que atraviesan el proceso de RICA necesitan patrocinadores y apoyo de la comunidad para ayudarlos a crecer en la fe. El equipo de patrocinadores de RICA ayuda a guiar, apoyar e instruir a quienes disciernen si deben convertirse en miembros de nuestra comunidad católica. Los miembros del equipo comparten su fe con adultos curiosos que buscan más información sobre la Iglesia Católica, muchos de los cuales buscan celebrar uno o más de los Sacramentos de Iniciación: Bautismo, Eucaristía y Confirmación.
